A Fun Weekend Away

We headed up to Garrett’s yesterday morning to experience Taste of Buffalo…. It was a sky-blue, hot July afternoon in downtown.

There was so much food to try with about 50 local restaurants represented: reuben soup, a Mediterranean veggie wrap, artichokes au gratin, mango smoothies, spicy curry are just a few of the tastes I experienced.

George and Garrett went for a Junkyard Dog from Ms. Goodies, which got the thumbs up.

After the heat of the streets we went back to the apartment for a little siesta, then it was time to head out to meet Heather’s parents.

George and I had the pleasure of a nostalgic ride in their ‘52 Cadillac, complete with the crank-down windows and old-car smell….

and dinner with a panoramic view of Lake Ontario and the skyline of Toronto.

It was a great weekend all around!

Lilies by Lamplight

Family Fourth

It was a really nice weekend with Morgan and Albert, Garrett and Heather here with us. We fit a lot into their two-and-a-half day visit.

We are left with a very quiet house now, but a lot of good memories of a busy weekend.

Lunch at Ginny Lee Cafe with my dad….

a visit to the swan pond…..

card games through the weekend…..

a trip to the Ithaca Farmer’s Market….

movie night at the local drive-in, and lots of good cooking and picnics on the deck.

It was a treat to have them all here with us!

A Full Day

After taking it easy most of the week, we put things into full swing today and got the house ready for company. Garrett, Heather, Morgan and Albert will be arriving about midnight.

One of our guest accommodations this weekend is our big orange tent.

After all the work was done, George and I relaxed under the willows, enjoying the view and the late afternoon sun.

Market Bounty

We haven’t been getting out much since George returned from the hospital, as his leg and foot are still pretty swollen. Today he put a shoe on for the first time, and we headed down to the farmer’s market.

I found everything I was looking for, except fresh dill, and this should hold me over till things are ready for picking from my own garden.

The fresh corn was sitting on the counter and missed getting into the picture. Can’t wait to try it!

A Watchful Eye

Our neighborhood has had an invasion of woodchucks, a family of four, maybe five. They are living under a shed on property adjoining ours and I often see them munching in the grass up on the hill. Today, however, I saw one munching down the flowers in my neighbor’s garden, so I went out the back door and it scurried away….till next time. Fortunately our vegetable garden has been safe since we put up the fence and everything is doing quite well since the loss of the three cabbages.

I did spot my little chipmunk friend today, as I was keeping a watchful eye out back. It was cleaning out the seed tray in the willow tree, and ran off to the brush pile when it spotted me. As soon as he/she decided I wasn’t a threat, it scooted right back to the tray and we kept our eyes on each other.

What a Difference A Day Makes

Yesterday George was laying in a hospital bed, hooked up to an IV. He went in eight days earlier, and it was a LONG week of waiting for his leg to heal from a nasty case of cellulitis.

It’s so good to have him home!

New Visitor

It’s only been the past couple of years that squirrels have come into the yard. Now we have this little chipmunk that appeared on the deck this spring.

Poor little thing was distressed that I showed up, and he/she didn’t know how to make an escape.

I was down in the yard checking the garden when it finally scampered down the steps and under the deck where I think it has its hideaway.

Pretty Blue

George gets credit for this one. He spotted the bluebird sitting on the clothesline.

Mr. Bluebird has been a regular around here this year, using a nest box in the neighbor’s yard, but stopping by to perch in the willow, on the clothesline, out front on the lamppost.

It’s always a treat to see him when he stops by!

Gradual changes

The garden has grown up quite a bit just this week after substantial rains the other day

the lone cabbage plant is coming along

the green bean plants are filling up their squares

the zucchini are taking their place

the cucumbers have popped up

and the tomatoes now have blossoms

at the side of the house, the Greek oregano has perked up

the hollyhock are starting to open

and my birthday rose bush is in full bloom

I love this time of year!
