The First Week of August

This week we have had fresh peaches, corn, wax beans, and blueberries from the produce stand. We have had swiss chard and green peppers from our own little garden. Our tomatoes are plenty, but all are still green. We have added to, and stirred the compost several times. I have pulled weeds, and tended to the flowers.

George has given the deck another protective coating. The awning has been down, and up, and back down again, as we anticipated a thunderstorm. The days have been warm, the nights, cool. Some days the sky has the look of autumn, and then there is that distinctive little chill in the air.

The grackles and the redwing blackbirds are fewer in the yard. The squirrels are back, and a yellow warbler stopped by.

The radio and newspaper suggest winter preparations to offset the cost of heating our homes, and the school calendar has arrived in the mail.

All signs point to summer winding down. I don’t like to think about it.

I know what you mean. Summer is flying by. Your peppers look good.
We are having some severe thunderstorms as I write. There has just been a flash flood warning also. It never ends. The neighbors are desperately trying to get a large field of hay baled, and now it has rained on it again.
It’s 56ยบ too, and now feels like fall.
I love that cloud picture with the sun rays..

I am with you.. I don’t want to think about it. But think I must and have, as I have spent much time the past 2 weeks writing lessons..geometry has a lot to answer for.

We have been hot and dry, so I must admit looking forward to some chill and damp that comes with Autumn. We have had geese flying overhead for three weeks, which I thought rather early. Wonder what they know?

I am SO jealous! We’re still in the summer preparations to lower summer utility bills! It is cooler this week, but autumn is a long ways off still. No mention or thought yet of winter.
Found your blog through Nature Knitter’s blog.

Jan, your peppers look great. Isn’t it nice to have warm days and cool evenings? Our nights have been getting cooler, too. But no sooner I would say something like that we’ll be heading into more hot weather. ;o) Actually, July and August are usually very pleasant here in San Jose. But September is kind of like a last hurrah where we will have about a week of temps in the 90s.
