Colors of Summer

This is the best time in the summer, for color in the yard. I enjoy walking around in the evening, seeing the different plants and flowers we have growing now.

This was a second packet of hollyhock seed that I planted last year. The flowers remind me of the “carnations” we used to make out of tissues, for decoration, when I was younger.

I bought this perennial at the garden shop. It looked pretty desperate for a home and some water, and now it is perking up, and I love the colors.

Our tiger lilies were a nice surprise this summer. The neighbors had pulled up the bulbs last year and offered them to us. They looked pretty sickly when we put them in the ground, and we weren’t sure they had survived.

These are some of the wildflower mix George spread around out front last year. I love the delicate color.

Another hollyhock surprise, shorter but the most colorful.

This is the one lone lily left after our midnight visit by a deer. There would usually be at least eight blooms around our lamppost.

Then there is the grey of rabbit and squirrel, together under the bird feeders, cleaning up the seed.

Don’t you just love all the colors of summer ? Your flowers are so pretty. I love Hollyhocks. When I was young my grandma used to make a lady with a big skirt out of the flower, but I can’t remember all of how it was done.
I wish we had bunnies, but with the occasional Coyote around they have all disappeared.
We just had a nice rain shower, and wouldn’t you know it, I just finished watering my hanging baskets.

What gorgeous flowers!! I love hollyhocks, and I love it most when they sprout in unexpected places…we sometimes get them in our compost, or on the garden path. I save and scatter the seeds willy nilly every year.

Nice pictures of the white flowers. White can be a real challenge to photograph. I made a lot of tissue flowers for our wedding. Do they do that anymore??

Hi Jan - your yard, your flowers are so pretty. I especially love the double blossoms of your hollyhocks. One of these days I hope to plant some hollyhock seeds again. I used to have a few of them when I used to live in Albuquerque (gosh, can’t believe that’s been more than 10 yrs ago). Thanks for sharing your floral beauties with us.
